Word Rumble

We have been working hard at improving our spelling this year.
Here is a link to the game we have started to play called Word Rumble
When it starts we have to say the word out loud and then write it down.

We can play this game at home too!! You may need to download each set as a powerpoint so you can play. At the moment we have all the spelling sets up to set E, so if you want to challenge yourself you can definitely have a try!

Matariki Celebrations

Last Friday our whole school had Matariki celebrations. We started bright and early with a dawn ceremony and breakfast, and then spent the rest of the day joining in on fun activities.

Our class buddied up with Room 21 and we were able to make poi, learn some new waiata, and make some printed artworks. After lunch we had a school wide sharing assembly and lucky for us we were able to perform on stage THREE times! We sang E rere taku poiTutira mai and Nga iwi e to the whole school!

Some of us were excited, some of us were nervous, but we did an amazing job.

Ambury Farm Trip

Last Tuesday we visited Ambury Farm with Room 2. We were able to see Fly the cow getting milked, feed some goats, chickens, and sheep, and we felt the hard bristles on Sesame the kunikuni pig. We were very lucky we went on such a beautiful day and we learnt many new things!

Check out some of our photos below.

We would also like to say a big thank you to the parents who came and helped look after us. Thank you mums and dad!!

Statistics

Today we were learning how to sort objects into groups. We were all given different things to sort out and we had to count and show how many we found. We were being connected learners by working together and organising what we had found.

Here are some pictures of us hard at work.

Honey Biscuits

On Monday we made delicious Honey Biscuits.

We read the book 'Honey Biscuits' by Meredith Hooper and loved it!
So, we decided to make our own!

Here are the steps we took to make our biscuits.

1. First we measured 120 grams of the smooth yellow butter.

2. Next we poured 120 grams of shiny white sugar.

3. Then we beat the two ingredients together until they were creamy.

4. After that we separated one egg so we could use the golden yolk, and we added that to our mix with one big tablespoon of runny honey.

5. When we mixed the golden yolk and runny honey in, we measured 180 grams of soft flour and one teaspoon of cinnamon.

6. We stirred all of our ingredients together and then the fun began.

7. We all had a chance to roll some of our fresh dough into small balls and then coat them in sweet cinnamon sugar.

8. The biscuits baked for 12 - 15 min in the oven at 175℃ and they cooled over lunchtime.

9. Lastly, we all sat in a big circle and ATE our sweet, scrumptious, delicious Honey Biscuits!!

Our biscuits gave us lots of new ideas and inspiration to use adjectives in our Writing. We loved baking in class and loved eating even more.

Big Aroha

Today we were super excited to have Ms Werry in Room 3 to teach us a new song.

We were learning how to keep the beat to a song called "Big Aroha" by The Slacks. The Slacks are a band that will be performing at our fair coming up in just 2 weeks!
We also learnt about the Maori word aroha and how it relates to things we love to do or people we love to be with. We were able to show the things we love through drawing, dancing, and singing along to the song. All of us love to be with families, including our pets.

Let us know what you love to do and who you love to spend time with.
Enjoy our pictures about some of the things we love and have a listen to the song below as well!

Another awesome discovery time!

This week in the Kowhai Team we were able to learn more about communication, bees, colour patterns, and water play. Here are lots of photos of our learning!

In Room 1 we made telephones using only cups and string. We had to work hard to make sure the string was pulled tight so our voices could travel through. We also played at the conversation station! Who might be a person you would call and have a conversation with?

In Room 2 we looked at bees. Lots of girls loved creating art with the flowers, so much so that we even wore some of the flowers! We think the bees would love us! We also tried to figure out how many shapes we could fit into hexagons. Do you think you can help us think of more?

In Room 3 we looked at colour and patterns. We could paint using cotton buds, weave yearn, make patterns using colour pencils and masking tape, and recreate patterns.

And finally in Room 4 we looked at things that might float or sink on water and different ways of measuring water. We also created our own boats that we tested to see if they would float too. Lucky for us many of them could!

Thank you Kowhai Team for being connected, flexible, creative, self-managing, curious, and reflective learners!

What other things do you think we could do at Discovery Time?

Creative Maths

In Room 3 we have been learning different ways to make 5.

We had so much fun learning how to add numbers together and being a classroom of creative learners we can also show the different ways we made 5. We did this using our hands, colouring in some gorgeous flowers, and today we made some colourful ladybirds! At the bottom of each picture shows what numbers we have added together to make the number 5.

Can you share with us what other  creative ways you might make 5?

Discovery Time

On Wednesday afternoon the Kowhai team all got together and had discovery time.

Here we were able to be self managing and flexible learners that took turns and shared. We were also very creative with lots of art, crafts, and making things happen. We're such a lucky team to have this time to explore. Look at us go!

I wonder what colours bees like the most?

If I mix this blue and yellow together, I wonder what colour I'll make?

What happens if I don't use a paintbrush?
I've just made my own reusable paintboard!

Look! The colours have mixed together!

I don't have to use the paintbrush,

We had so much fun and learnt lots of different things. We can't wait to connect with our team again and do this all next week!

Becoming Connected Learners

Our poem this week was called "People are Different" and we talked about how we may all look different but we can connect to each other because we can all feel the same kinds of things such as happiness and laughter. We then worked in pairs and shared our ideas so we could decorate 'people' of our own. Here are some of our creations.

Room 3 Writing Gallery

We were learning about patterns and how they repeat themselves, so we made our own patterns to decorate our writing wall. We can't wait to show our publishing this week!

Welcome to Room 3 for 2017!

Nau mai, haere mai, and welcome to Room 3!

We are a Year One class and there are 18 of us that will be spending 2017 together, 19 including our teacher Whaea Chloe.
This year we are aiming to be more creative, self managing, flexible, connected, reflective, and curious learners as we paddle on our journey together.
